Our History: 60 Years in the Making

R-S-Furniture

In The Beginning...

It all starts with a man named Morris Berenson. As a journalist working for the Associated Press, Berenson lived in Montreal but traveled regularly to Europe on assignment. Before leaving on a trip abroad, he was approached by a friend at R.S. Furniture, a manufacturer of Danish style teak furniture in Montreal.

R.S. requests that Berenson find European concealed hinges, which were rare in North America at the time.

Upon arriving in Europe, Berenson discovers Heinze in Herford, Germany, known for plastic molding and concealed hinges. He establishes a partnership and introduces the hinges to R.S., which they love!

In the 1960's, Heinze becomes Berenson's first supplier, making him one of the first importers of European cabinet hardware in North America.

1965 Expansion

Berenson officially incorporates "The Berenson Morris & Company Ltd". He expands his product catalog to include different types of European furniture hardware and other products from overseas.

1970s Quebec Turmoil & New Ownership

A political crisis hits Quebec and Montreal making it difficult for Ango-Quebecers like Berenson to do business. He decides to sell. The company is purchased by Walter Morris, whose tight-knit family continues to run the business today.

We proudly continue Berenson's legacy today, designing and sourcing innovative cabinet hardware solutions from across the globe to elevate the Canadian woodworking industry.
